Main Purpose of the Role:

The Videographer is responsible for capturing high-quality video footage and content that supports Daily Sun's multimedia storytelling initiatives. Working closely with the Video Editor, this role focuses on field-based video production, ensuring professional-grade raw material is captured for editing into compelling digital content across Daily Sun's platforms. The position combines technical filming expertise with journalistic awareness to create visual content that resonates with Daily Sun's audience.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Shoot high-quality video footage for news stories, feature articles, and multimedia projects across Daily Sun's coverage areas
  • Operate professional video equipment including cameras, audio recording devices, lighting, and stabilization equipment
  • Conduct video interviews with newsmakers, community leaders, and story subjects under Video Editor guidance
  • Ensure all captured footage meets technical standards for resolution, audio quality, and visual composition
  • Provide on-location video coverage of breaking news events, community gatherings, and scheduled news conferences
  • Respond rapidly to breaking news situations and capture timely footage for immediate digital publication
  • Document live events, protests, celebrations, and other community activities relevant to Daily Sun's readership
  • Coordinate with multimedia journalists to ensure comprehensive multimedia coverage of major stories
  • Maintain awareness of Daily Sun's editorial focus and community interests when selecting shots and angles
  • Maintain and operate video production equipment ensuring optimal performance and reliability
  • Manage field data storage, backup procedures, and secure transfer of footage to editing systems
  • Conduct equipment checks and basic troubleshooting to minimize technical disruptions during assignments
  • Coordinate equipment needs with Video Editor for different types of shoots and technical requirements
  • Stay current with camera technology and production techniques relevant to news video production
  • Collaborate with Video Editor on pre-production planning for video assignments and story coverage
  • Research shooting locations and logistics to maximize efficiency and story impact
  • Prepare equipment and plan shot lists based on story requirements and editorial direction
  • Scout locations and assess technical challenges before major shoots or events
  • Coordinate with editorial team on timing and scheduling for video content creation
  • Review captured footage for technical quality and completeness before delivery to Video Editor
  • Organize and label video files using consistent naming conventions and metadata systems
  • Ensure all footage is properly backed up and transferred according to Daily Sun's digital asset management procedures
  • Provide Video Editor with detailed notes on shot content, interview subjects, and technical considerations
  • Maintain detailed logs of footage captured for each assignment to support efficient post-production workflows

 

Required Knowledge & Skills:

  • Advanced proficiency in operating professional video cameras (DSLR, mirrorless, camcorders)
  • Strong knowledge of video production techniques including composition, lighting, and audio capture
  • Understanding of technical video standards, file formats, and quality requirements
  • Knowledge of field production logistics, equipment transport, and safety procedures
  • Sound understanding of journalism principles and ethical considerations for video coverage
  • Familiarity with digital file management and transfer protocols
  • Strong visual sense and ability to capture compelling and newsworthy footage
  • Excellent physical capability to carry equipment and work in varied field conditions
  • Professional demeanor when representing Daily Sun in community settings
  • Adaptability and problem-solving ability in unpredictable news environments
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to technical quality standards

Minimum Requirements:

  • Formal qualification in Journalism or Media Studies, or certificate or diploma in Video Production, Film Studies, Media Technology, or related field
  • Demonstrated proficiency in professional video camera operation and field production techniques
  • Minimum 2-4 years' experience in video production, preferably in news, media, or documentary environment
  • Proven experience in field-based video shooting including interviews, events, and breaking news coverage
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in field conditions and under deadline pressure
  • Experience collaborating with editorial teams and supporting post-production workflows
  • Proficiency with professional video cameras and associated equipment (tripods, stabilizers, microphones)
  • Experience with portable lighting equipment and audio recording devices
  • Knowledge of video file formats, storage requirements, and transfer protocols
  • Basic understanding of video editing workflows to optimize footage for post-production
  • Familiarity with mobile video production and social media content capture techniques
  • Understanding of backup procedures and data security for field-captured content
