Daily Sun, requires the services of a dynamic Editor-in-Chief to lead this iconic brand in a modern day South Africa.


Main Purpose of the role:


To lead; drive and manage the editorial functioning and strategy of the entire brand over digital and print platforms, which includes overseeing the editing, writing, and design of the website and paper to ensure competitive advantage and commercial success. 


Key Responsibilities:


  • Develop a vision to take the brand forward and implement a strategy to achieve the vision;
  • Create, plan, implement and manage the content strategy, vision and guidelines for online media to drive traffic to the site and create a favourable environment for advertisers;
  • Manage, coordinate and drive daily uploading of relevant, fresh and accurate content that will drive traffic to the site;
  • Ensure the site is making its target in terms of the metrics set (pageviews; unique browsers; engagement time etc)
  • Develop and implement editorial policy for the entire publication;
  • Independent-minded and in touch with current and emerging tendencies and dynamics in the political, business, media and social spheres of South African society;
  • Make final decisions pertaining to style, content and tone of the publication
  • Ensure readership targets are met;
  • Identify, evaluate and edit news specifically for the target market/type of publication
  • Coordinate news gathering with the assistance of the News Editor daily;
  • Ensure that the publication schedule is being met;
  • Adhere to all governing laws as well as the Press Code of South Africa;
  • Monitor, publish, adhere to and enforce the code of ethical conduct, making final decisions pertaining to the code of ethics and its enforcement;
  • Lead, motivate and inspire a team, and mobilise them around the editorial vision;
  • Work in consultation with management to promote increased revenue for the publication;
  • Drive commercial editorial projects to generate revenue for the brand;
  • Manage and control the editorial budget and costs;
  • Represent the brand in a credible, professional and ethical manner; conduct ongoing public relations campaigns to promote the brand;
  • Keeping track and staying close to the change in customers (readers; audience; advertisers) demands and needs and the ability to adapt the brand strategy to satisfy the changing needs in maintaining the relevance to the audience and ensuring maximum commercial effectiveness.



The successful candidate will be:

  • A suitably qualified, leading and influential South African journalist;
  • Independent-minded and in touch with current and emerging tendencies and dynamics in the political, business, media and social spheres of South African society;

  • A leader with proven media and newsroom management experience and skills;

  • An achiever who sets high performance and ethical standards.
  • Has digital news experience and/or displays the ability and eagerness to be upskilled in leading and managing the digital strategy of the brand.


Minimum Requirements

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in journalism, language or media studies;
  • 10 years editorial experience, including managing a large title and team;
  • Thorough working knowledge of the newspaper production;
  • Good general understanding of business;
  • Sound knowledge of media law;
  • Well developed writing and editing ability in required languages
