Job Description

Media24 Weekly Magazines division has a vacancy for a copy editor in the Cape Town office of YOU. The main purpose of the job is to help YOU’s editorial team to produce world-class content for its various print and online platforms that’s error-free and in keeping with the brand’s tone and style.


Key performance areas

Ensuring copy is easy to read, in the tone of voice relevant to the YOU market and of a high standard.

Rewriting/editing copy of a wide variety of styles and subject matter to ensure it’s in line with YOU’s requirements, has the correct structure and length and adheres to grammar rules and the title’s style guide.

Proofreading pages and making corrections.

Translating small amounts of text (including captions and authors’ corrections) from Afrikaans to English.


Requirements:


Relevant diploma/degree, preferably in languages.

Two to three years’ experience working in the media/publishing industry with excellent language skills.

Must be prepared to work long and irregular hours, including public holidays and weekends.


Skills and competencies:

Excellent attention to detail.

Ability to work independently, as member of a team and with colleagues from other departments.

Knowledge and understanding of the target market.

Critical thinking ability: the candidate will be required to evaluate copy to determine whether it’s within acceptable standards for the brand.

Resilience and ability to deal with extreme pressure: the candidate must have a proven track record of being able to manage stressful deadlines.

Excellent problem-solving skills: the candidate will be required to think laterally when problems arise and be solution-driven in a high-pressure environment.

Excellent general knowledge and the ability to research and check facts.
