Position:                     Sales Director

Main purpose:           To deliver sales performance that contributes meaningfully to the company’s financial goals


Jonathan Ball Publishers (JBP), a leading South African publisher and agent for British and American books, is looking for a dynamic individual to take on the role of Sales Director. This an executive level position reporting to the CEO. The successful candidate must be highly motivated and determined, with proven strong managerial and administrative skills. As Sales Director this person will be required to manage a team of independent sales divisions and is ultimately responsible for the performance of the entire sales team. As an executive member of the company, the Sales Director is expected to participate in a variety of activities beyond the scope of sales in order to contribute to the overall success of the business.

    • Members of the JBP management team
    • Principals of agencies represented by JBP
    • Booksellers
    • Publishers


People Management

  • Manage a team of independent and diverse sales managers in line with the company’s HR requirements
  • Develop skills and foster talent within the sales team
  • Lead from the front and set an excellent example for all staff members of JBP


Sales and Negotiation

  • Constantly drive sales by motivating and encouraging the sales team
  • Identify and develop new sales opportunities
  • Negotiate trading terms with agencies, customers, and suppliers
  • Identify promotional opportunities and secure terms required to achieve best possible sales



  • Compile annual sales budget in conjunction with sales managers, finance director, and CEO
  • Compile customers sales budgets in conjunction with sales managers, finance director, and CEO
  • Compile annual sales department expenses budget, including travel budget
  • Provide sales information and expectations for sales reforecasting requirements



  • Develop and manage the sales strategy for the trade, non-traditional, and digital sales teams
  • Analyse local and international trends to identify new opportunities, areas where the team can improve, risks that need to be reduced, etc.


Analysis and Reporting

  • Analyse and report on sales performance, market conditions, local and international trends
  • Stay abreast of industry news and keep CEO informed regarding pertinent developments


Executive Responsibilities

  • Serve as the management representative on the company’s Employee Engagement Forum
  • Contribute to developing and managing the company’s strategic goals
  • Study, understand, and follow all company policies and impart this knowledge to all members of staff
  • Set an excellent example for all members of staff to follow and ensure that your representation of the company is impeccable and above reproach in all situations
  • Live the company’s core values of respect, integrity, courage, and accountability


Skills, Competencies, Qualifications and Experience

Minimum requirements

  • Extensive sales management experience at a senior level within the book publishing industry or the book retail industry
  • Demonstrably strong financial acumen
  • Proven sales and negotiation skills
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal
  • Strong interpersonal, administrative, strategic, and people management skills
  • Ability to build and maintain excellent working relationships
  • Must be determined, resilient, enthusiastic, motivated, positive, pro-active, and be a team player who is able to work independently
  • A deep-seated passion for reading
  • Computer literate with strong Excel skills
  • A valid driver’s licence and own transport
  • An appropriate degree would be beneficial

  • Must have a good understanding of the South African retail environment
  • Must be flexible, adaptable, able to resolve problems quickly and decisively

  • Must create and maintain a strong sense of collaboration within the sales team, and with other departments
  • Must be courageous and diligent about representing the needs of the sales team in line with the company’s strategic goals and policies
