Main purpose:                 

To formulate a strategy that encompasses all elements of marketing and publicity. In its execution it must support our sales efforts and seek to achieve our company goals and objectives.


Jonathan Ball Publishers (JBP), a leading South African publisher and agent for British and American books, is looking for a dynamic individual to take on the role of Marketing and Publicity Manager. The successful candidate must be highly motivated with a proven track record of managing marketing and publicity campaigns. As the Marketing and Publicity Manager, this person will be required to manage teams that make up the marketing and publicity departments and must have experience in managing at a senior level. The Marketing and Publicity Manager will be responsible for ensuring that the efforts of the marketing and publicity departments support the objectives of the sales team and that all teams work together to achieve the company’s financial goals.


Please note that this position requires considerable after-hours attendance at events including but not limited to book launches, book fairs, and exhibitions.


Key responsibilities

Strategy and Planning

  • Create, implement, and manage the marketing and publicity strategy
  • Create and oversee dynamic marketing and publicity initiatives across traditional and digital platforms and evaluate performance to recommend improvements
  • Continuously analyse markets and trends and identify marketing and publicity-related risks and opportunities
  • Coordinate workload across teams and ensure that everyone is working toward a common goal


People Management

  • Manage teams that make up the marketing and publicity departments in line with the company’s HR requirements
  • Develop skills and foster talent within the teams, supporting growth opportunities where possible
  • Motivate, manage and develop both teams to ensure the achievement of performance objectives;


Relationships and Communication

  • Build and maintain excellent relationships between the marketing and publicity departments and other departments within the company, particularly with the sales department
  • Ensure that there is a good flow of communication between the marketing, publicity, and sales departments
  • Build and maintain excellent relationships with international principals and contacts, customers, authors, media and suppliers
  • Oversee corporate communication, including internal communication, communications with international contacts, and act as a liaison with Media24 corporate communication



  • Allocate and manage the marketing and publicity budgets in line with the objectives of the sales team, alongside the Sales Director
  • Submit annual department expenses budget, including travel and training budgets



  • Plan company’s annual sales conference alongside CEO and Executive PA
  • Oversee arrangements for book launches and author tours, assisting if required
  • Oversee company’s participation at exhibitions including South African Book Fair, Comic Con Africa, SARCDA, and more



  • Oversee creation and delivery of presentations for customer promotion pitches, trade and media events, and those required on an ad hoc basis
  • Provide support where required to the non-trade sales team in developing presentations to customers



  • Oversee and in some cases assist with all marketing and publicity activities including but not limited to the following:
    • Preparation of press releases and publicity material such as monthly Highlights newsletters
    • Distribution of books and publicity material to the media and other relevant parties
    • Maintenance and updating of the publicity media and clippings archive
    • Maintenance and updating of all company websites in line with POPI requirements
  • Negotiate best possible rates on all promotional activities
  • Prepare departmental management reports, reports for principals, and ad hoc reports


Skills, competencies, qualifications and experience

Minimum requirements

  • Relevant tertiary qualification
  • At least five years management experience at a senior level in the marketing and publicity sphere
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal – must be able to confidently write creative copy
  • Strong interpersonal, administrative, strategic, and people management skills
  • Ability to build and maintain excellent working relationships
  • Must be determined, resilient, enthusiastic, motivated, positive, pro-active, and be a team player who is able to work independently
  • A strong interest and love for books, reading and publishing in general
  • Computer literate with strong Excel skills
  • A valid driver’s licence and own transport
  • An appropriate degree would be beneficial
